Remembering Janice Baserga

Why do we have a Janice Baserga Award? Many members of the club share their memories of who Janice Baserga was.

She was a Vet at Scarborough Animal Hospital who saw many of our goldens over the years.  She was a wife to Jeff, mother to Drew and Forest, loving Dog Mom to Sally, Lany, Cookie, Samantha, George, Tiki, Mick, Emily, Basil, Gaby and Katy.  They all had their spots on the couch, chairs or ottoman in her living room.

She loved goldens, loved breeding goldens, competing with her dogs, loved coordinating group pictures of as many goldens as we could get to sit/stay in a picture- often wearing silly costumes based on the holiday.  I could go on, but I’m going to let some of my fellow MGRC members share their memories.  I will just add that I feel very lucky to have known Janice, to have called her a friend, mentor, my dog's Vet, and a fellow Golden Girl.  -MJ McCormack

Janice was a supporter, mentor, and dear friend to many. She would go out of her way for anyone who asked for her help or advice. As a member of Vacationland Obedience Club back in the late 80’s, we traveled many places to train and show. Always encouraging me to continue. In the 2000’s this also included confirmation in both AKC and UKC, traveling to Michigan in 2014 to participate in the Top 10 confirmation event. Janice was always the “driver” and would take as many goldens with her as possible wherever she went. Her legacy and love for all dog sports carries on today with the Celebrations genes in my Goldens.  I feel privileged to have had her as my friend. -Sandra Cloutier

Janice was always so quick to take people under her wing. She loved to educate and guide anyone in need of a mentor in training, veterinary care or breeding. In my case, she saw my passion of the breed and helped me enter the world of breeding golden retrievers. I had no idea what I was doing and how to do things right. She guided me every step of the way and I am who I am today doing what I love because of her. I’m forever grateful. -Lauren Sawyer

I knew her for a shorter period of time, but she was kind and wise and encouraging. I still consider her one of my dearest friends— I’m so lucky to know her.  I’d add she was so genuine/so real. What a role model! -Carol Plummer

Janice was my friend and vet for all of my goldens over 30 years. In memory of Janice, I dress Tek up for every holiday. Janice also is the one who supported and encouraged me to join the Maine Golden Retriever Club. A true friend and kind sole inside and out.- Teri Cookman

Janice meant so much to so many people.  She was a brilliant and compassionate Veterinarian, amazing mentor and a beloved friend.  Her love and knowledge of the Golden Retriever breed was unsurpassed.  Janice recommended the excellent breeder in NH where our current three Golden Retrievers came from. Our Golden’s have all gone on to be such sweet and gentle therapy dogs. Therefore, she touched the lives of many during her lifetime and  after. Every therapy dog visit to patients, residents, or students would not have transpired if not for the help and support from Janice.  -Nancy Seiden

A piece from her obituary , that is fitting, insightful and descriptive.....

"Instilled with a love of horses by her father from birth, Janice went on to become an amazing veterinarian, distinguished among her peers by her unmatched dedication to her patients. She was a consummate clinician with an unparalleled level of empathy.

Her lifelong love of horses transformed over time into an equally impassioned love of Golden Retrievers, starting with her first Golden, Sally, whom she trained in obedience. Sally was followed by Janice's second Golden, Laney, who also excelled in the obedience ring, and then Cookie, who began the Celebrations Golden breeding lineage. Janice meticulously monitored, planned, and evaluated her breeding practices to produce many litters of beautiful, healthy, and trainable Goldens, many of whom she kept, resulting in the family living with seven of her own Goldens at one point. Janice was a committed member of the Maine Golden Retriever Club until her final days." - shared by Kim Loranger Why do we have a Janice Baserga Award? Many members may have never met Janice. So we thought it might be nice to share some memories. Please share these testimonials from our club members.
